Factoid About The Eureka Area
Did You Know...Eureka Was Once Known as Deweyville?
Eureka, in the extreme northwest corner of Montana, was first named Deweyville after Ed Demers' wife's maiden name. The very first buildings were on the banks of the Tobacco River. The town quickly began building up the hill. A large sawmill, which supported the economy of the town, burned down in 1923, prompting the residents to develop a flourishing Christmas tree market.

Huckleberries grow in abundance all over the hillsides, and the story goes that one day a man was walking around up the hills looking for and found an unbelievable amount in one spot, causing him to yell, “Eureka!”. Since, he and his companions were on their way down to the town of Deweyville, and this amazing cache of berries overlooked the town, they started calling the town Eureka. The name stuck.
