Factoid About The Eureka Area
Did You Know...Eureka Was Once the Christmas Tree Capital?
It sure was, but not so much any more, although you can still get an amazing tree if you live within driving distance. The Town of Eureka, Montana, is located on the Tobacco River in an area known as the Tobacco Valley in the United States and as the Tobacco Plains in British Columbia to the north (Eureka is about nine miles from the Canadian border).

Eureka was founded in the early 1880s as settlers moved north from Missoula and south from Canada. It was one of the last areas to be developed in Montana in frontier times, and logging was a major draw and source of income for decades. The climate and soil are perfect for trees as the many dense forests in the area prove. Eureka was once known as the "Christmas Tree Capital of the World," because of the many evergreens shipped to many urban points for holiday sales.

Now, with so much of the land protected, most folks throughout the country have to contend with commercially farmed Christmas trees that are closer to their own homes. But, if you happen to be in the area, take a moment to look at the evergreen trees and you will see why they were once so popular.
