While you may know that the town of Whitefish was carved out of the wilderness when James Hill moved the Great Northern division point to Whitefish from Kalispell, in 1904. But did you know that Mr. Hill did much more than just build the railroad? All along the Great Northern railway he diversified the farming and new industry. He was a pioneer in conservation, believing that the land should be developed but never despoiled. James J. Hill was the Empire Builder who started with nothing but a vision. It was that vision that made him special and unlike the other railroad men of the time who built their railroads around the cities, Hill built a city around his railroad. His technique didn't work for anyone else, but his skill, experience, and planning made his railroad progress rapidly. The land he built on was considered worthless and unsuitable for population. But with his skill, his railroads grew, he extended his empire across the Pacific to the Orient. Hill's railroads were impressive in length, growth rate, and revenue, setting the stage for town that flourishes today.
