Did You Know...Bigfork Owes Its Fortune to 500?
Back in 1892, there really wasn't anything in Bigfork, there wasn't even a town, not until a man by the name of Everit L. Sliter decided that the east shore of Flathead Lake would make a really sweet spot for an orchard. With that goal firmly in mind, Mr. Sliter set out 500 apple, cherry, plum, and pear trees. Then in 1902, he planted the Bigfork town site right at the mouth of the Swan River. The east shore has since become a major cherry-growing area, one of the largest in the country. The town has grown sweeter every year and so has the fortune of the Sliter family or at least you get that impression if you do a quick check of the name on Forbes.
