Factoid About The Whitefish Area
Did You Know...that one of American's Most Celebrated Authors is From Whitefish?
Her name was Dorothy M. Johnson. And while that name make not ring any immediate bells, you probably know her work. As a young woman, she left her little town in Montana to seek her fame and fortune in New York City. After many years there, in 1950, she returned to her home Whitefish and went to work for the local paper. She served as the editor for more than three years until she joined the faculty of the University of Montana School of Journalism. While there she wrote and published seventeen books and fifty-two short stories, each one of them primarily about the Great American West.

In the year 1959, she was made honorary member of the Blackfoot Tribe. In 1976, 'The Writers' awarded her for the second time, the Levi Strauss Golden Saddleman Award, for bringing dignity and honor to the history and legends of the West. The books that made this Montana woman famous are; The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962) • A Man Called Horse (1970) • The Hanging Tree (1959) • The Return of a Man Called Horse (1976).
