Factoid About The Polson Area
Did You Know...In the 1890s it was illegal for Native Americans to Hold Traditional Dances?
Sadly, that was very true. The earliest evidence of an attempt to hold a Fourth of July Powwow was in 1891. The Bureau of Indian Affairs found it difficult to keep them from happening because the powwows were just held anyway, they just kept it secret. Thankfully though, those days are long gone and today one of the largest 4th of July Powwows is held every year , on the Flathead Reservation. You happen to be in Polson (which is also on the Flathead Reservation) be sure to make it to this event the Arlee Celebration. Where you can experience side of American history that remains hidden to most. The Traditional Dancing and Drums, will surely leave you with a sense a awe and wonder that such beautiful things still exist.
