Factoid About The Whitefish Area
Did You Know...Have You Ever Seen a Fish With Fur?
Now, just about everyone knows that fishermen are know to tell a tale or two, but a man from Whitefish, Montana back, in 1929, may have spun the best one ever. Or did he?

His name was J. H. Hicken, he said that he discovered the fur-bearing fish while fishing “Iceberg Lake” located near Whitefish, Montana. This is no trick or fake and you can see one at the Whitefish Museum today. The story was published in May, 1929, in the Montana WildLife magazine. The Fur-Bearing Trout is a species of fish that possesses a thick coat of fur. These furry fish are primarily found in the northern regions of North America, but particularly in Canada, Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. There are a number of theories that attempt to explain this creature's luxuriant coat. According to a lesser-known theory, this species of trout owes its fur to four jugs of hair tonic that were accidentally spilled into the Arkansas River (in Colorado) sometime during the 1870s.
