Factoid About The Whitefish Area
Did You Know...That The Cannibal of Montana is On the Endangered Species List?
The Cannibal of Montana. That terrifying predator that prowls the lakes near Whitefish, putting fear into the hearts of ... well mostly other fish. Since, the terrifying Cannibal, I am talking about is actually the bull trout and it is Montana's largest native trout. It is closely related to the Coastal Dolly Varden and at one time people thought that they were the same species of fish- they know better now. As an adult it eats almost exclusively other fish. Which is how it got the name the "Cannibal of Montana's Streams" because of its predatory habits. The bull trout is now a state "species of special concern" and classified as a "threatened" species under the Endangered Species Act. Threats to the bull trout include loss of habitat and habitat damage, competition with introduced species, and illegal poaching. An angler caught Flathead Lake bull trout in 1989, that weighed nearly 22 pounds – that's the size of 2 year child.
